We had the pleasure of interviewing Kalista Odegaard (@kalistaodegaard), a 17 year old Special Effects Makeup artist based in Barrie, Ontario.

Arielle: Tell us more about your special effects makeup look “Looking fear in the eye”.

Kalista: This piece is a special effects makeup look I created back in December, it is based off of the fear of bugs and insects (Entomophobia). A fear that I myself have struggled with. I created this piece in hopes of one day being able to get over my fear and to hopefully help others overcome similar fears as well.

What first inspired you to start creating special effects makeup looks?

I have always loved makeup and have been doing it for years. I started to get really into horror movies when I was about 13 years old and was so impressed with the special effects makeup looks I was seeing in these films. It inspired me to try and recreate similar looks I was seeing on tv and I absolutely loved it!

Are there people/artists in particular that inspire you today?

One of my biggest inspirations is Christien Tinsley, he is one of the makeup artists for the show American Horror Story. I have always been so impressed by him and how skilled he is. Another artist I look up to is Sophie Baverstock, she was the winner of season 3 for the Netflix show Glow Up. Her makeup looks are out of this world and I hope to one day be as good as her.

How long does it take you, on average, to complete a special effects makeup look?

This special effects makeup look took me about 2 and a half hours to complete, however, other special effects looks I have created have taken anywhere from 3 to 4 hours to fully complete.

What is your creative process like?

I always plan ahead and sketch out rough drafts of what I am hoping to accomplish with each look. I then decide on which materials would work best, and begin.

Do you have a favourite look of yours? If so, which one, and why is it your favourite?

“Looking fear in the eye” will always be one of my favourites just because I will never forget how proud I felt after creating it.
